And the three eldest sons of Jesse went [and] followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the battle [were] Eliab the firstborn, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah. And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched [corn], and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren;.
And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle. And Saul said to him, Whose son [art] thou, [thou] young man? And David answered, I [am] the son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite. And it came to pass on the morrow, [which was] the second [day] of the month, that David's place was empty: and Saul said unto Jonathan his son, Wherefore cometh not the son of Jesse to meat, neither yesterday, nor to day?
Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious [woman], do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother's nakedness?
For as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die. Then Saul said unto his servants that stood about him, Hear now, ye Benjamites; will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, [and] make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds;.
That all of you have conspired against me, and [there is] none that showeth me that my son hath made a league with the son of Jesse, and [there is] none of you that is sorry for me, or showeth unto me that my son hath stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?
Then answered Doeg the Edomite, which was set over the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. And Saul said unto him, Why have ye conspired against me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread, and a sword, and hast inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?
And Nabal answered David's servants, and said, Who [is] David? And there happened to be there a man of Belial, whose name [was] Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjamite: and he blew a trumpet, and said, We have no part in David, neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to his tents, O Israel.
As Israel faced battle against the Philistines, Jesse sent his son David to take food to his brothers who were fighting 1 Samuel If someone had to tend the sheep, there was probably a herd and that signified wealth. We know that David thought highly of his parents. While fleeing from Saul in the Bible, David planned for his father and mother to stay in Moab 1 Samuel He wanted to make sure they were safe.
The Bible says in Isaiah that a rod would spring forth out of the stem of Jesse. A Branch shall grow out of its roots. We know that the Branch is significant because it is capitalized.
Usually, in the Bible as in the English language, proper nouns are capitalized. References to God are capitalized. Mentions of Jesus or Son of God are usually capitalized. A branch typically means a limb from a tree. This Branch is significant because it is a precursor to the Son of God. Turn to Mathew 1 and read the generations of Jesus Christ. Notice verses Here, you will see the parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents of David.
Move down to verse 16, you will see the names Joseph, Mary, and Jesus. In this same chapter, you also see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Judas mentioned.
Jesse followed spiritual leadership and respected the man of God. We find this out in 1 Samuel God sent the prophet Samuel to anoint the next king of Israel. Apparently, Jesse was an elder of Bethlehem. They knew that prophets often showed up to make declarations from God and to issue warnings. He did as Samuel instructed and sanctified himself along with his sons. Jesse did not know that his youngest son was about to be anointed king.
He was able to follow instructions and allowed the prophet to test all his sons. This also speaks to his character as a father. He was able to make his grown sons pass by Samuel. There is no mention of whether the sons wanted to follow through with this, but Samuel was a prophet, so everyone just fell in line.
He was probably not known for just taking people through the motions. They knew he was there for a reason. Jesse was wealthy. Jesse appeared to be a man of wealth and had all his sons busy and working. We know that God can often bless his people, sometimes with material wealth. We know that he wants us to work if we can and are not retired. The youngest son was somewhere tending sheep. But it is not quite certain if 1 Samuel 20 belongs to the same source as In answer to the first reference, Jonathan calls his friend "David," and Saul repeats the phrase "the son of Jesse," abusing Jonathan personally 1 Samuel , where the meaning is uncertain.
The reference to David as "the son of Jesse" here and in the following verse is contemptuous, not because of any reproach that might attach itself to Jesse, but, as Budde remarks, because "an upstart is always contemptuously referred to under his father's name" in courts and society. History repeats itself! Here Jesse is mentioned as "an Ephrathite of Beth-lehem-judah" , not "that" Ephrathite, which is a grammatically impossible translation of the Massoretic Text , Ephrath or Ephrathah being another name for Bethlehem, or rather for the district.
He is further said to have eight sons , of whom the three eldest had followed Saul to the war Jesse sends David, the shepherd, to his brothers with provisions 1 Samuel Afterward David, on being brought to Saul and asked who he is, answers, "I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite" 1 Samuel Jesse is also described 1 Samuel as being "in the days of Saul an old man, advanced in years" so emend and translate, not as the Revised Version British and American , "stricken in years among men".
The mention of his having 8 sons in 1 Samuel is not in agreement with 1 Chronicles , which gives only 7 sons with two sisters, but where Syriac gives 8, adding, from , Elihu which Massoretic Text has there probably by corruption Curtis, Chronicles, Budde Kurz. According to all these narratives in 1 Samuel, whether all 3 be entirely independent of one another or not, Jesse had land in Bethlehem, probably outside the town wall, like Boaz see BOAZ his grandfather Ruth In 1 Samuel , 1 David entrusts his father and mother to the care of the king of Moab, but from some have inferred that Jesse was dead although most critics assign at any rate to the same stratum as chapter Jonathan tells Saul that David wanted to attend a family sacrificial feast at Bethlehem 1 Samuel Massoretic Text reads, "And he, my brother, has commanded me," whereas we should probably read with Septuagint, "and my brethren have commanded me," i.
Duhm's explanation suggests a parallelism between David and Christ, of whom the former may be treated as a type similar to Aaron and Melchizedek in He. Saul might pour contempt upon "the son of Jesse," but Isaiah has given Jesse here a name above all Hebrew names, and thus does Providence mock "society. The Messianic king was to be of the family of Jesse the father of David. In Romans Paul quotes the Septuagint of Isaiah Jesus is a branch or descendant of the family of Jesse, as well as of David.
Greek Iessai -- Jesse , the father of King David Jesse , the father of King David. David -- perhaps "beloved one," a son of Jesse David or David. Radday -- a son of Jesse Abishay -- "my father is Jesse ," an Israelite name Yishay -- father of David And when Samuel mourned for him, God bid him leave off his concern for him, and to take the holy oil, and go to Bethlehem, to Jesse the son of Obed, and to Augustin on the Psalms.
This Psalm hath an inscription, that is, a title, "There have failed the hymns of David, the son of Jesse. And Samuel said, How can I go?
